Ureuk Memorial Tower, a Hilltop Tribute Overlooking Jeongjeonggol
This hilltop memorial in Goryeong honors Ureuk, a Gaya musician remembered for creating the 12-string gayageum.

A memorial to Ureuk
Ureuk is remembered as one of Korea’s three great master musicians. According to the record, near the end of the Gaya period, King Gasil commissioned him to create the gayageum in Kwaebin-ri, in Daegaya-eup.
The instrument had 12 strings, modeled on the twelve months of the year. Its rounded top represented the sky, while its flat underside was said to represent the earth.
Music and legacy
Records say Ureuk composed 185 pieces during his life, but none of those works survive today. The record does preserve the account that he composed 12 pieces in Jeongjeonggol, the valley visible from the memorial’s hill.
The monument and a portrait shrine were built to honor Ureuk’s achievements. The site was also intended as a place for education and a space where local residents could rest.
Setting and visit
The memorial stands on a small hill with a clear view of Jeongjeonggol. Its setting connects the monument to the place associated with the 12 compositions recorded in Ureuk’s story.
The site is open at all times throughout the year, and parking is available. Address: 경상북도 고령군 대가야읍 주산순환길 209-18.
Fees, opening hours and closing days change with the season and circumstances. Please confirm the official notice before you set off.
