Cheongwansan Natural Recreation Forest, a rocky summit above a sea of reeds
This mountain recreation forest pairs dramatic rock ridges and seasonal flowers with views over the southern coast.

A mountain of striking rock formations
Cheongwansan, one of the five celebrated mountains of Honam, stands 723 meters high on the boundary between Gwansan-eup and Daedeok-eup. Much of the mountain is rock, and its peaks rise sharply above the ridges. Near the summit, jagged stones are said to resemble a royal crown decorated with jewels, giving the mountain its name.
The landscape changes with the seasons: camellias bloom red in spring, while silver grass creates a striking display in autumn. Near the summit, the reed fields cover about 50,000 pyeong. The mountain’s proximity to the coast also brings sea winds across its ridges, meeting the dramatic rocky terrain in a powerful natural setting.
Views from the ridges
From the mountain, the islands and coastline of the southern sea spread out like a traditional landscape painting. Looking north, visitors can see Wolchulsan in Yeongam, Jeamsan in Jangheung and Mudeungsan. On clear days, Hallasan may appear across the sea.
The ridgeline’s unusual rock formations create the impression of a natural sculpture gallery. Cheongwansa Temple is within 500 meters, and its proximity to the mountain’s hiking trails makes it possible to combine a visit to cultural heritage with time on the mountain.
Forest facilities and trails
The recreation forest has an administration building, cabins, parking, cooking areas and a forest training ground. Its 7-kilometer mountain path is maintained for visitors, and the trails connect with routes on Cheongwansan.
The forest offers both day visits and overnight stays. Day access is 09:00–18:00; lodging check-in is from 15:00, with departure by 11:00 the following day. It is closed every Tuesday. Check the official notice before visiting in case details have changed.
